A Major Foundation of the Economy

Agriculture remains an important part of Nepal’s economy and provides livelihoods for a large portion of the population.

Nepal’s geographical diversity allows farmers to produce different crops at different altitudes. Major agricultural products include:

  • Rice
  • Maize
  • Wheat
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Cardamom
  • Ginger
  • Sugarcane
  • Dairy and livestock products

The Terai region is particularly important for large-scale agricultural production, while the hills and mountains support livestock farming, horticulture, tea, herbs, and other high-value crops.

However, Nepal’s agricultural sector continues to face challenges such as traditional farming practices, inadequate irrigation, limited access to technology, fragmented landholdings, fertilizer shortages, climate risks, and difficulties connecting farmers with markets.

Modernizing agriculture, expanding irrigation, improving storage and transportation, and developing agro-processing industries could increase farmers’ incomes and reduce dependence on imported food products.
